Computer Science Rankings (beta)

This is an experimental fork. It has a number of changes from the original csrankings page. Most notably, it includes a Social Media/Social Computing category (which has CSCW and ICWSM) and adds InfoVis, WSDM, and ICDM. I've also added faculty from non-CS departments (specifically programs like UW's HCDE and iSchool, Cornell's ITP, Michigan's School of Information, UMD's HCIL/ischool, and Colorado's Information program). Often these programs house the bulk of HCI and Data Mining faculty for different schools. I suspect there are other similar situations (e.g., EE departments with Machine Learning folks). Since many of us actually have appointments and can advise CS students, I think this is fair. That said... treat this as a beta of a beta.

This ranking of top computer science schools is designed to identify institutions and faculty actively engaged in research across a number of areas of computer science. Unlike US News and World Report's approach, which is exclusively based on surveys, this ranking is entirely metrics-based. It measures the number of publications by faculty that have appeared at the most selective conferences in each area of computer science. This approach is intended to be difficult to game, since publishing in such conferences is generally difficult: contrast this with other approaches like citation-based metrics, which have been repeatedly shown to be easy to manipulate. That said, incorporating citations in some form is a long-term goal. This site is in beta and is a work in progress.

The conferences listed (at most three per area) were developed in consultation with faculty across a range of institutions. They are meant to span most established research-centric areas of computer science - in particular, those with their own research-focused ACM SIG - and are not intended to be comprehensive. In particular, only areas where at least 50 institutions have publications since 2000 are included. The rubrics (AI, Systems, and Theory) are provided for ease of comparison with rankings published by US News and World Report.

Output is attributed to the institution where authors are currently affiliated full-time, tenure-track faculty members. An author's publications follow them if they move. Currently, this database includes US and selected Canadian and European CS or EECS departments (or equivalent); other institutions will be added in the near future.

Adjusted counts: each publication is counted exactly once, with credit adjusted by splitting evenly across all co-authors. This approach makes it impossible to boost rankings simply by adding authors to a paper. Average count computes the geometric mean of the adjusted number of publications in each area by institution. This normalizes for the size of areas, so that large and small areas are weighed the same. Publications must be at least 6 pages long to be counted. Total count is the sum of the adjusted number of publications.

This site was developed and is maintained by Emery Berger, incorporating feedback from faculty across a wide range of institutions. This variant was forked by Eytan Adar
Based on code and data originally collected by Swarat Chaudhuri.
The original faculty affiliation dataset was constructed by Papoutsaki et al., which has been extensively cleaned and updated.
All publication data is from DBLP (last updated May 1, 2018).
Some faculty members are listed multiple times to account for multiple variants of their names in DBLP.
